Program Notes

Dusk is a setting of four poems that explore the liminal spaces between binary oppositions: land and sea, night and day, life and death. The music reflects the binary nature of the text with its own dualisms. Traditional performance practice must coexist with blues and gospel elements in the music. Pitch centers move unpredictably back and forth between two tonal areas. The singer and pianist wax and wane in importance, their relationship never hostile but not exactly egalitarian either. While both text and music explore these binaries extensively, their tension is never completely resolved; the deepest beauty often resides in mysteries that cannot be explained.
