Program Notes

Psalm 122 is inspired by the polyphonic choral music of the renaissance composers, particularly the English choral tradition as exemplified by composers like William Byrd and Thomas Tallis. The staggered vocal entrances produce pungent dissonances reminiscent of these composers’ “horizontal” sense of harmony, while the (mostly) non-repeating form and tension between rhythmic groups of 2 and 3 evoke 16th century musical structures.
